Motor neurone disease. Further evidence for an abnormality of nerve metabolism.

چکیده
Physiological and biochemical studies were carried out on 16 patients with motor neurone disease (MND). It was confirmed that the peripheral nerves in cases of MND are often unusually resistant to ischaemia especially as regards the large sensory fibres. Biochemical investigations demonstrated a tendency to carbohydrate intolerance and abnormal pyruvate metabolism. When compared with other related studies in MND it seems very likely that there is a metabolic abnormality present in MND which demands further study.

Motor neurone disease. An abnormality of nerve metabolism.
Seneviratne and Peiris, 1968a, b) have revived interest in the performance of peripheral nerves and muscles under ischaemic conditions, and in connection with this work there is evidence that the normal differences in aerobic and anaerobic metabolism in muscle fibres is influenced by the type of motor neurone supplying them. The demonstration by Gregerson (1968) and Seneviratne and Peiris (1968...
متن کاملA quantitative electrophysiological study of motor neurone disease.
Thirty-two patients with motor neurone disease were investigated using quantitative electrophysiological techniques. Estimates of the number of surviving motor units in the extensor digitorum brevis muscle and measurements of the electrophysiological parameters of these units are present along with the values for motor nerve conduction velocities. The results indicate that reinnervation in moto...
متن کاملDifferential gene expression in a cell culture model of SOD1-related familial motor neurone disease.
Motor neurone disease is caused by mutations in Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) in 15-20% of familial cases, due to a toxic gain of function by the mutant enzyme. However, the underlying mechanism of SOD1-mediated neurodegeneration remains uncertain. By investigating alterations in gene expression in the presence of mutant Cu/Zn SOD, we aimed to identify pathways that contribute to motor neur...
متن کاملMotor neurone disease and military service: evidence from the Scottish Veterans Health Study.
OBJECTIVES In 2003, it was reported that motor neurone disease was linked to military service in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. A large study in the US confirmed an association with military service but found no association with specific conflicts or length of service. Non-veteran studies have suggested an association with physical activity, smoking and other risk factors. We used data from the Scotti...
متن کاملAmyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ( ALS ) or Motor Neurone Disease
In this paper, I attempt to combine previous research data in order to design a new mechanism by which neurotrophic factors may be delivered to their target sites. Although this idea is only theoretical, is provides a novel mechanism for future drug designs involving neurotrophic factors. In this paper, I use motorneurone disease as an example, and present a theoretical drug design for this dis...
